As is noted in the opening speech, Trelix’s home of Cygnus is “1,912 light years from Earth.” This means that when the Cygnans look at our planet through telescopes, they see the planet as it was 1,912 years ago—when Ancient Rome was ascendant and Latin was the language spoken throughout Europe and Northern Africa. Before they sent Trelix to Earth, these 2,000-year old images were all they knew of our planet. Thus, they became familiar with Latin through their observations, and Trelix learned written Latin, though poorly, before she left on her mission forty years ago.

Her description of the vision “the dry region north of the long great wall” is the Gobi Desert in Mongolia.
